Every year there are thousands of accidents involving toys in the home, but by taking a few simple precautions most of these could be avoided.

Toy manufacturers have to work to very strict regulations and there are several safety marks used on packaging and sometimes the toy itself to show that it meets the essential safety requirements. All toys sold at Toyjeanius carry the CE mark and most will also be marked with the Kite mark and Lion mark. it is important to bear in mind that a toy marked as safe for a 6 year old may be dangerous in the hands of a 5 year old!

It is very important to check the recomended age which is usually stated on the box. This is a guideline, but you know your child best! If you don't think your 4 year old child is ready for a toy recomended for 3 years + then don't buy it!

Always look at the size of the toy and any accessories. Babies and toddlers will put absolutely anything in their mouth so don't buy anything with small parts until you are sure they have learnt not to do this! It's also worth mentioning that magnets, magnetic toys, small balls and marbles should be kept out of reach until children are at least 6 years old.

Before giving any toy to your baby check it thoroughly for any sharp or rough edges. Make sure that any attachments such as eyes and buttons are securely fastened, and ensure that there is nowhere for tiny fingers to be trapped.

Cuddly toys are often given as presents to babies and young children, but the fillings, fur and hair on these toys can be a choking hazard. Babies may try to suck it and toddlers can pull small pieces out without you noticing. It is best to keep these toys out of the cot and bed until over the age of 3.

Cot toys that tie onto the side of the cot or any other toys with ribbons or cords should be kept well away from all children. Tomy have a great range of cot activity toys which fasten very securely to the cot side, but some older toys are just tied on. Be very careful with these, as you may be surprised just how far babies can move when they want to reach something!

It is very important that all toys, not just new ones, are regularly checked for signs of wear and tear. If a toy is broken, or damaged even just a tiny bit throw it away immediately before it becomes a problem.
